Elementary Program
Language
At Willowglen we use a multi-faceted approach to language skill development. The junior grades focus on grammatical concepts, paragraph development, story writing and poetry. As students master these concepts they are able to move on to detailed compositions, book reports, research projects and essays.
As students progress through the grades they move on from learning to read and begin reading to learn. Developing a joy of reading is imperative to improving vocabulary, understanding new concepts and appreciating literary works.
Mathematics
Research has consistently shown that concrete representations of mathematical concepts is key for a strong understanding of the foundations of mathematics. Once students have mastered the concepts of number systems and operations they are ready to move with confidence into the abstract world of advanced mathematics. Topics such as geometry, algebra, probability, and problem solving are taught with the expectation that all students will exceed the Ontario Curriculum standards.
Science
A strong foundation in science allows students to understand the natural and physical world around them. At Willowglen School, exploration and experiments assist students in discovering scientific concepts. Hands on demonstrations as well as computer modeling ensure that science is understandable and memorable.
Social Studies
In this multicultural society in which we live the importance of studying local and global communities has never been greater. Students need to understand the histories and interconnectedness of societies if they are to develop informed opinions and enjoy our socially diverse world.
Computer Skills
In this information age, computers have become an integral part of education. They are a main source of independent research as well as an enhancement to the regular curriculum. At Willowglen all students receive computer literacy instruction including keyboarding and word processing skills, the use of research tools, and project presentations.
Physical Education
A strong Health and Physical Fitness program is important for many reasons. Through sports and co-operative games children develop teamwork and coordination skills. They learn about their bodies and the keys to healthy living. At Willowglen we make use of the many community facilities nearby including the Oakville Gymnastic Club and the Glen Abbey Community Centre for activities such as swimming lessons, and gymnastics.
Music and Drama
Music and Drama are essential to the development of a complete person. Students learn about different styles of music, instruments of the orchestra, and important composers. At our annual Spring Concert classes have the opportunity to perform songs and plays. Creativity is also fostered through the writing of their performance pieces. The evaluation of the effects of media on our lives is another important topics for children.
Homework
At Willowglen we believe that the purpose of homework is to assist students in the development of work habits and to aid in communication with parents. The homework itself should only require a few minutes of time to complete. More importantly than the time spent on homework is the students responsibility for recording the homework in the agenda, being responsible for bringing the workbooks home, and returning the completed work to school. These work habits a child develops in the earlier years will ensure success in higher grade levels.
